His first captain, Typhon, had already given his soul over to Nurgle and plotted to ensnare his Primarch. After many weeks stranded, disease had taken hold on the usually resistant Astartes and even Mortarion himself. Left with no other choice, Mortarion pledged himself to Nurgle and both he and the Death Guard were reborn as the Plague God's chosen instruments. Once reunited with his father, The Emperor, and given command of the XIV Legion, whom he rechristened the Death Guard, Mortarion joined the Great Crusade. Barbarus was a world perpetually shrouded in poisonous fog and it was here, fighting the Necromancers of that world that Mortarion would develop his hatred of psykers and his respect for the resilience of man. His forces would soon come to be known for their own resilience, favouring attrition tactics to wear down their enemies and crush them utterly. When Horus betrayed the Imperium and the Emperor, Mortarion sided with him. Stolen from the Emperor's gene forges and scattered to the warp, Mortarion fell to the feudal world of Barbarus.
